American Express

Membership Rewards transfers to ANA, Singapore, Air France/KLM, Delta, and Hilton, the deepest premium-cabin partner library in the US market.

All issuers

American Express Membership Rewards sits at the top of the US bank-points ecosystem for one core reason: partner breadth. Where Chase Ultimate Rewards leans on a tighter network of airline and hotel partners, Amex spans ANA, Singapore KrisFlyer, Air France/KLM Flying Blue, Delta SkyMiles, and Hilton Honors, among others. That depth is built for the traveler who wants optionality, specifically someone willing to study multiple sweet spots and act when award space opens. If your goal is a single domestic cash-back redemption or a straightforward hotel stay, this currency may be overkill. If your goal is a Singapore Suites seat or an ANA first-class cabin, Membership Rewards is one of the few currencies that can credibly target both.

Before applying for any Amex card, the application rules deserve serious attention. Every welcome bonus is a one-time offer per card product, per lifetime of your Amex account. Unlike Chase's 5/24 rule, which is a velocity cap, the Amex once-per-lifetime rule is permanent: if you earned the Platinum bonus five years ago, you will not earn it again on a new Platinum application. Amex's pop-up notice before checkout will often warn you if you're ineligible, but that check is not perfectly reliable. Equally important: Membership Rewards points remain transferable only as long as you hold at least one MR-earning card. Closing your last MR card forfeits your entire balance. That makes product sequencing, and downgrade planning, a real strategic consideration before you open multiple cards.

The strongest single use case Membership Rewards enables right now involves ANA Mileage Club. JFK to Tokyo in ANA first class prices at roughly 110,000 ANA miles round-trip, a rate accessible by transferring Amex points to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club and then booking ANA space through that partner. That is the technical route. The critical caveat: ANA first-class award space is severely capacity-controlled. Finding confirmed availability before you transfer is not optional; it is the only sensible sequence. At our conservative valuation for ANA miles, a confirmed seat at that rate represents significant value, which is precisely why it appears on our sweet spots list. Singapore KrisFlyer similarly unlocks Suites and saver business awards on Singapore metal, again subject to the same availability constraints that govern all premium-cabin redemptions through partner programs.

On the card side, the American Express Gold Card at a $325 annual fee with a 100,000-point welcome bonus (our valuation: approximately $2,000) is the clearest entry point for most travelers. It earns well on dining and U.S. supermarkets, which are everyday spending categories, and it feeds directly into the MR ecosystem without demanding the commitment of a higher annual fee. The upgrade target is The Platinum Card from American Express at $895 annually, which carries a 175,000-point welcome bonus worth approximately $3,500 by our valuation. That fee is justifiable only if you actively use the lounge access, travel credits, and elite status benefits. Treating the Platinum as a pure points-earning card rarely pencils out given the annual cost.

The Hilton-branded cards deserve a separate note. The Hilton Honors Aspire at $550 and the Hilton Honors Business at $195 both earn Hilton points directly rather than transferable MR, and Hilton's cobranded bonuses are large, 150,000 and 130,000 points respectively. Amex's 1:2 MR-to-Hilton transfer ratio, which occasionally rises with periodic 25 to 50 percent transfer bonuses, means MR points can also feed your Hilton balance efficiently when those bonuses are live. For anyone building toward a high-category Hilton property, watching for those transfer windows matters.

Review the full card list below, and if you want to measure Membership Rewards directly against Chase Ultimate Rewards or Citi ThankYou points on a per-point basis, the program comparison tool is the right next step. Find space first, then transfer.

Application rules

The quirks of how Amex approves cards. Read these before you apply, most denials are predictable.

  • Once-per-lifetime bonus: each card welcome bonus is one-shot per Amex account. Pop-ups before applying are common.
  • Membership Rewards points stay flexible only if you keep at least one MR-earning card open.
  • Hilton transfer: 1:2 ratio plus periodic 25-50% bonuses make this the best value at full speed.

Transfer-partner highlights

  • ANA Mileage Club. JFK to Tokyo first class for ~110k MR via Virgin Atlantic
  • Singapore KrisFlyer. Suites and saver business
  • Hilton Honors, 1:2 ratio plus transfer bonuses
  • Air France/KLM Flying Blue. Promo Awards rotate monthly
