CSP
The Chase Sapphire Preferred, almost universally abbreviated to CSP, becomes relevant the moment a new traveler asks which card to get first. The answer, for most people, is this one. A sign-up bonus of 100,000 Ultimate Rewards points clears the bar at which point transfers to airline and hotel partners start making serious sense, and our 1.7¢ per point conservative valuation for Chase UR puts that bonus at roughly $1,700 in partner redemption value before a single dollar of ongoing spend is counted.
The most common confusion is between the CSP and its sibling, the Chase Sapphire Reserve (CSR). The Reserve carries a $550 annual fee and earns 3x on all travel and dining, while the Preferred sits at $95 annually with 3x on dining, 2x on broad travel, and 5x on Chase-portal travel. Both cards unlock the same transfer partners, which is the real asset. A reader who sees "Sapphire" anywhere and assumes they know which card is being discussed should check the fee and earn rates carefully. The CSP is also sometimes conflated with the no-fee Chase Freedom Flex or Freedom Unlimited, which earn UR points but cannot transfer to partners without a Sapphire card on the same account.
The mechanics that make the CSP work center on those transfer partners. Points move 1:1 to programs including World of Hyatt, United MileagePlus, Air France/KLM Flying Blue, and Singapore KrisFlyer, among others. Hyatt transfers consistently produce the highest verified CPP on our sweet spots page, because Hyatt's award chart still prices aspirational properties at rates that cash rates far exceed. That said, premium cabin awards on airline partners require confirmed saver space before a transfer makes sense. Business and first class inventory is capacity-controlled and not reliably available; transferring speculatively risks locking points into a program at a lower ceiling.
For a traveler carrying only one rewards card, the CSP's $95 fee, broad transfer network, and attainable bonus represent the most straightforward on-ramp to serious redemption value available in the current market. Find space first, then transfer.
