TY

Citi ThankYou Points
Definition
Citibank's transferable bank-points currency. Earned via Citi Premier, Strata Premier, Prestige (legacy), Custom Cash, and Rewards+.
Why it matters
Best transfer partners: Turkish Miles&Smiles (45k business class to Europe), Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, Singapore KrisFlyer, Avianca LifeMiles. We value TY at 1.8¢/pt.

Imagine you hold 60,000 ThankYou Points sitting in your Citi account and you are weighing whether to redeem them as cash back at 1¢ per point or transfer them to Turkish Miles&Smiles to target a business-class seat to Europe priced at 45,000 miles. At our conservative 1.8¢ valuation for Citi ThankYou Points, the transfer path is worth nearly double the cash-back path on paper. That gap is the exact moment when understanding TY as a transferable currency, rather than a simple bank rebate, changes your decision.

A common point of confusion: not every Citi card earns the same flavor of ThankYou Points. The Citi Premier and Strata Premier earn fully transferable TY that can move to airline and hotel partners. The Citi Custom Cash and Rewards+ earn a restricted version that requires pairing with a Premier or Strata Premier to unlock transfers. The legacy Prestige card also earned transferable TY, but it is closed to new applicants. Readers sometimes conflate TY with Chase Ultimate Rewards or Amex Membership Rewards; those are entirely separate currencies with different partner rosters and different valuations.

On mechanics: Citi transfers to most airline partners process at a 1:1 ratio (1,000 TY points to 1,000 airline miles), though a small number of partners use different ratios, so confirm the specific ratio on the partner program page before committing. Transfers are generally irreversible once initiated, and there is no standard timeline guarantee across all partners, with some processing in minutes and others taking several days. Because saver-level business and first-class award space is capacity-controlled and never guaranteed, the right sequence is to locate confirmed award availability at the sweet-spot rates listed here before you move a single point out of your TY account.

Find space first, then transfer.
