MR

Amex Membership Rewards
Definition
American Express's transferable bank-points currency. Earned via Amex Gold, Platinum, Business Platinum, Green, and Business Gold cards.
Why it matters
Best transfer partners: ANA Mileage Club (Asia first/business), Virgin Atlantic Flying Club (ANA partner awards), a transfer partner (Star Alliance), and Singapore KrisFlyer (Suites). We value MR at 2.0¢/pt.

Imagine you are holding 60,000 points earned from the Amex Gold card and trying to decide whether to redeem them for a $600 statement credit or transfer them toward a business-class seat to Tokyo. That decision, and whether the transfer is worth executing at all, depends entirely on understanding what Membership Rewards (MR) points are and how they behave as a transferable currency rather than a fixed-value coupon.

MR is sometimes confused with the rewards balance shown inside the Amex portal, where points can be redeemed for travel through Amex Travel at around 1.0¢ per point. That portal rate is not the ceiling. The real leverage comes from transfer partners, where our 2.0¢ valuation for MR reflects what a well-researched traveler can extract by moving points into a frequent-flyer program before booking an award. Readers also occasionally confuse MR with Amex's cash-back products; those cards do not earn transferable MR points and cannot access the partner ecosystem at all.

The mechanics matter here. MR transfers to most airline partners at a 1:1 ratio, meaning 1,000 MR becomes 1,000 miles in the partner program. Transfers are generally one-way and irreversible, so confirming award space before initiating a transfer is essential. The highest-leverage partners for premium cabins include ANA Mileage Club (a frequent target for ANA first and business class), Virgin Atlantic Flying Club (which prices ANA partner awards at competitive rates), a transfer partner (broad Star Alliance coverage), and Singapore KrisFlyer (Singapore Suites access). All of these are capacity-controlled programs, and saver-level business or first-class space can be scarce, particularly on popular routes and travel dates. Transferring points without confirmed space is a meaningful risk.

Cards that earn MR include the Amex Gold, Platinum, Business Platinum, Green, and Business Gold. Each carries different earning rates and annual fees, so the right card depends on your spending profile. The credit cards section of rewardztravel.com breaks down which card is likely to generate the most MR for a given mix of categories.

Find space first, then transfer.
