United Polaris Lounge

The single best US-domestic-airline lounge network. Sit-down dining is what makes it stand out.

The United Polaris Lounge consistently earns its reputation as the best lounge network operated by a U.S. carrier, and the sit-down dining service is the core reason. Most domestic airline lounges are self-serve buffets with mediocre grab-and-go food. The Polaris experience is different: a full table-service restaurant inside the terminal, staffed with servers and a proper menu that rotates by location and season. If you have a qualifying international itinerary in United Polaris business or First class, this lounge is worth building extra time into your day for. Access is available at six major hubs, EWR, ORD, IAH, IAD, SFO, and LAX, so the network covers most connecting itineraries through United's route structure.

The soft product inside is genuinely strong across the board. Table-service dining is complimentary and covers multi-course meals with regionally inspired menus. The bar operates without ticket limits, meaning craft cocktails, wine, and premium spirits are poured freely without the per-drink charging you'll encounter in some international carrier lounges. Showers are available at no additional charge and are stocked with quality amenities. Private day-rooms are also free on a first-come, first-served basis, which makes these lounges particularly valuable on long pre-departure waits or connection layovers. There are no paid add-on services to navigate; what you see is what you get, and what you get is legitimately premium.

On the practical side, timing matters. Midday international departure banks at ORD and EWR tend to fill the dining room, and the day-rooms go quickly on busy travel days. Arriving when the lounge first opens for your flight's departure window gives you the best shot at a table and, if you want one, a private room. Access requires a same-day United Polaris business class boarding pass or a same-day Star Alliance First class boarding pass on an international itinerary. There is no credit card that purchases standalone Polaris Lounge access the way some cards grant Priority Pass or Centurion entry; access here flows through your ticket class only. Guest policies allow one complimentary guest per eligible passenger, though some locations enforce this strictly during peak hours.

Know when to skip it. The Polaris Lounge is international itineraries only. If you are flying a domestic United segment, even in first class on a premium transcontinental route, you will not qualify. In that case, redirect to a United Club location at your departure airport, or lean on a credit card that includes Priority Pass access. Star Alliance partners flying in business class (not First) on their own metal do not qualify either; the Star Alliance First class requirement is firm. If your itinerary is purely domestic or your cabin class falls short of the threshold, chasing Polaris Lounge entry is not worth the confusion at the door.

For those who do qualify, treat this lounge as a genuine part of the travel experience rather than an afterthought. The dining room alone justifies arriving early. Build in at least 30 to 60 minutes beyond your normal pre-flight buffer so you have time to eat a full meal, use a shower if you want one, and settle in before the gate call pulls you out.
