Nairobi with points
Kenya Airways via Flying Blue or Qatar Qsuite via Doha. Both around 80k pts saver.
Nairobi sits at an interesting intersection for points travelers: it is simultaneously an underpriced long-haul award destination and a city where hotel redemptions offer almost no meaningful value, which means your strategy here splits sharply between the two currencies. The ~80,000-point saver business price on routes through Doha or Nairobi's own hub has not moved much while partner surcharges on other African routes have climbed, making this one of the few long-haul corridors where the saver rate still reflects something close to the original intent of the award chart.
On the airfare side, Qatar Airways is the most-discussed option, with Avios or Qatar Privilege Club pricing the Doha connection into NBO at the 80,000-point saver level in business class, which puts you in a QSuite configuration on the Doha leg. American AAdvantage is the typical transfer path for Avios to Iberia or British Airways, depending on surcharge exposure. United MileagePlus prices the same corridor via its own partners, and Flying Blue (Air France/KLM miles) prices Kenya Airways codeshare space at a comparable rate, again around 80,000 points in business. Delta SkyMiles can cover some routing through European hubs, though SkyMiles dynamic pricing makes the actual cost harder to predict in advance. At our conservative 1.5¢ per point valuation for Flying Blue miles and 1.4¢ for AAdvantage, an 80,000-point redemption in business class represents roughly $1,200 in value against cash fares that routinely exceed $4,000 in a premium cabin. That math holds, but saver business space on any of these carriers to NBO is severely capacity-controlled, and Kenya Airways partner space through Flying Blue in particular can be thin outside of off-peak windows.
The hotel picture in Nairobi is blunt: the properties most worth staying at do not participate in major loyalty programs in a way that rewards points redemptions. Hemingways Nairobi is a cash-only property with no points pathway. Fairmont The Norfolk sits on the Accor Live Limitless platform, so if you hold Accor points, it is a plausible redemption, but Accor point values rarely clear our 0.7¢ per point conservative benchmark at this property's cash rate tier. Sankara Nairobi operates as an independent boutique hotel with no major program affiliation. The honest conclusion is that Nairobi is an airfare-points destination, not a hotel-points destination. Budget your transferable currency accordingly and pay cash for the hotel night if you are staying in the city itself.
Seasonality matters a great deal here because award space and redemption value both hinge on when you fly. The dry season running June through October aligns directly with peak safari season in the Maasai Mara, which means award space in premium cabins tightens significantly as that window approaches. Carriers protect their remaining revenue seats. If you are targeting a July or August departure, you will need to begin searching partner award calendars six to nine months in advance. Shoulder months on either side of the dry season (May and November) sometimes open space that peak months will not, and cash fares drop enough that the points leverage improves even if the weather is less predictable.
The booking sequence here is worth following precisely. Because Nairobi hotels are largely cash-booked and most offer reasonable cancellation windows, reserve the hotel first with a refundable rate. That locks in the ground component without committing your points. Only after you have confirmed award space on your chosen carrier and cabin should you initiate the transfer from Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, or whichever currency feeds your target program. Points transferred prematurely before space is confirmed are points at risk.
Find space first, then transfer.
