Marrakech with points

Connect through Paris on Air France business and use Marriott points for the riad night.

Marrakech sits in an interesting gap in most travelers' award maps: it draws enough leisure traffic to keep paid fares elevated, but not enough high-yield corporate traffic to fill premium cabins, which occasionally creates openings for saver-level business awards that would be harder to find on denser routes. The city also straddles two solid hub connections, Paris CDG and London LHR, which happen to be home bases for two of the most point-transferable airlines in the world. That geographic coincidence is the foundation of any serious award strategy here.

On the airfare side, the sharpest pricing runs through Air France/KLM Flying Blue. A saver business award from a US gateway to Marrakech via CDG prices at 53,000 Flying Blue miles one-way at the saver level. Flying Blue is a transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards, Capital One, and Citi ThankYou, so you have multiple currencies to draw from. At our 2.0¢ valuation for Chase UR, 53,000 points represents $1,060 in theoretical value; whether a specific itinerary clears that bar depends entirely on the cash fare available at the time you search. British Airways Avios can price the LHR-RAK leg cheaply as a short-haul redemption, but routing from most US cities through London adds a transatlantic segment that complicates the math significantly. For most US-based travelers, the CDG connection via Flying Blue is the cleaner path. That said, premium cabin availability on transatlantic and onward segments is capacity-controlled and frequently tight, particularly on the CDG-RAK short segment. Find confirmed saver space before you move any miles.

The hotel picture in Marrakech is genuinely difficult from a pure points perspective. La Mamounia and the Royal Mansour are the two properties that define luxury here, and both are worth serious attention. The Four Seasons Marrakech operates on a cash-only basis, which removes it from any points calculation despite its category standing. Royal Mansour, as a Relais and Chateaux property, does not participate in a mainstream loyalty program either, leaving Marriott Bonvoy as the most practical points currency for riad-style properties in the medina. The portfolio at that tier within Marriott can vary by property and by season, so verify current category placement and peak versus off-peak pricing directly before banking on a specific redemption rate. La Mamounia accepts Virtuoso and Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts bookings, which can layer complimentary benefits onto a cash or points-adjacent rate.

Timing matters both for the destination and for award inventory. The shoulder windows of March through May and October through November offer the most temperate conditions and are widely recognized as peak travel periods, which means award space in business cabins tends to compress during those months. If your dates are fixed within those windows, search for award space three to five months out and set up alerts through Flying Blue's own tools. Summer in Marrakech runs extremely hot and sees somewhat looser demand from European leisure travelers, which can translate to modestly better award availability, though the tradeoff in comfort is significant. The winter holiday period also spikes cash and award demand, particularly from European short-haul markets.

For the booking sequence, start with the hotel. Properties like La Mamounia and the Royal Mansour book up well in advance, and refundable rates give you a confirmed anchor for the trip while you continue monitoring airline award space. Once you have a cancelable hotel hold in place, you can watch Flying Blue availability with a firm travel window in mind. Only transfer points to Flying Blue after you have located the specific saver award segments you intend to book; points moved to an airline program are generally non-returnable, and availability can disappear between a search and a transfer.

Find space first, then transfer.
