Our Take

The entry-level Southwest card after the 2025 refresh raised the fee to $99. Worth it primarily if you're chasing the Companion Pass; the Priority card delivers more value if you fly Southwest 2+ times per year.

Key Benefits

  • $99 fee (post-2025 refresh)
  • 3k anniversary points
  • Free first checked bag
  • Companion Pass qualifying

All Benefits

  • Earn 50,000 bonus Rapid Rewards points after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening (current public Chase offer as of May 2026; worth roughly $725 at TPG's February 2026 1.45 cpp Rapid Rewards valuation)
  • $99 annual fee, applied to the first billing statement (unchanged through the late-2025 Southwest cobrand refresh, keeping the Plus as the entry-level Southwest personal card below the $149 Premier and $229 Priority)
  • 2x Rapid Rewards points per dollar on Southwest Airlines purchases including flights, inflight, Southwest gift cards, and Getaways by Southwest packages (Southwest Cruises, Charters, and Cargo are excluded)
  • 2x Rapid Rewards points per dollar on the first $5,000 in combined purchases each account anniversary year at gas stations and grocery stores; after $5,000 you drop to 1x with no maximum (this is the new bonus category added in the late-2025/early-2026 Southwest cobrand refresh per the Chase issuer page)
  • 1x Rapid Rewards points per dollar on all other purchases, plus 1x on the first $10,000 of balance transfers made during the first 90 days from account opening
  • 3,000 Rapid Rewards bonus points each cardmember anniversary year, deposited automatically (worth roughly $43.50 at 1.45 cpp; not enough to offset the $99 annual fee on its own, so the card relies on welcome bonus + companion pass mechanics for value)
  • First standard checked bag free for the primary cardmember and up to 8 additional passengers on the same Southwest reservation (Southwest now charges $35 for a first checked bag after the 2025 bag-fee change, so a family of four saves up to about $280 round trip)
  • Complimentary Standard seat selection within 48 hours prior to departure, when available, for the cardmember and up to 8 additional passengers on the same reservation; Chase notes average value of about $50 round trip based on published fares July 29-August 28, 2025
  • 10% Southwest promotion code each cardmember anniversary year, valid for one year from delivery and applied to the base fare on Southwest.com or the Southwest mobile app; excludes Basic fare, group travel, Southwest Vacations, Getaways by Southwest, swabiz.com bookings, and special fares like military and government fares
  • 10,000 Companion Pass qualifying points boost each calendar year, deposited by January 31 or up to 30 days after account opening, reducing the practical Companion Pass hurdle from 135,000 to 125,000 additional qualifying points per Frequent Miler's 2025 Complete Guide
  • Companion Pass qualifying points: points earned on the Plus card from purchases AND points earned from the Plus welcome bonus both count toward the 135,000-point Companion Pass calendar-year threshold (per Chase issuer page Companion Pass Qualifying Points section and Frequent Miler October 2025 update; purchased points, transferred points, and hotel/car partner conversions do NOT count)
  • Group 5 priority boarding for the cardmember and up to 8 additional passengers on the same reservation under Southwest's January 2026 boarding overhaul, giving earlier access to overhead bins (eligible passengers' boarding passes display 'Cardmember' to indicate the privilege)
  • 25% back as a statement credit on Southwest inflight purchases including Wi-Fi and drinks made with the Plus card by the cardmember or authorized users; statement credit posts same day as purchase and appears on the monthly billing statement within 6-8 weeks
  • Complimentary DashPass membership for 12 months when activated for the first time with the Plus card between 02/01/2025 and 12/31/2027, valid on both DoorDash and Caviar; auto-renews at the then-current monthly DashPass rate after the complimentary period unless canceled
  • $10 off quarterly on one qualifying DoorDash non-restaurant order each calendar quarter after activating the Plus card DashPass membership; discount applies to subtotal only, does not roll over, and requires using the Plus card at checkout
  • No foreign transaction fees on purchases made outside the United States (Visa card; standard Chase Southwest cobrand benefit)
  • Lost luggage reimbursement up to $3,000 per covered traveler for checked or carry-on baggage that is lost, damaged, or stolen during a covered trip (NY residents capped at $2,000 per bag and $10,000 per trip; standard Chase Visa Southwest benefit)
  • Baggage delay insurance up to $100 per day for up to 3 days for essential purchases like toiletries and clothing when checked baggage is delayed more than 6 hours
  • Purchase protection covers eligible new purchases for 120 days from date of purchase (90 days for NY residents) against damage or theft, up to $500 per item
  • Extended warranty protection extends the manufacturer's U.S. warranty by an additional year on eligible warranties of 3 years or less, up to 4 years total from date of purchase
  • Auto rental collision damage waiver: secondary coverage inside the United States and primary outside the United States when you decline the rental company's CDW and charge the rental to the card
  • Welcome bonus eligibility: ineligible if you currently hold any Southwest Rapid Rewards personal credit card, or if you have received a new cardmember bonus on any Southwest Rapid Rewards personal card in the past 24 months (Southwest Business and Employee cards do not block eligibility)
  • Chase 5/24 rule applies: applicants who have opened 5 or more new card accounts across all issuers in the past 24 months are typically declined for this card per Chase's general application policy
  • 19.24%-27.74% variable purchase APR per the Chase issuer pricing and terms disclosure (calculated as the prime rate plus 12.49% on the low end and prime plus 20.99% on the high end, with a 29.99% maximum)
  • Visa card network (the Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus is issued on Visa; standard Chase Southwest cobrand network choice)
  • Sunset legacy bonus categories: the prior 2x earn rates on Rapid Rewards hotel and car rental partners, local transit and commuting (including ride-hailing), and on internet, cable, phone, and select streaming services were retired with the late-2025/early-2026 Southwest cobrand refresh and replaced by the new 2x gas station and grocery store category capped at $5,000 per anniversary year
  • Sunset legacy benefits: the prior two EarlyBird Check-In credits per anniversary year on the Plus card were retired in the late-2025/early-2026 refresh; current Plus cardholders should not expect EarlyBird credits in the 2026 benefit set per the parallel TPG documentation on the Priority refresh
  • In-flight purchase rebate: Less generous than Premier and Priority cards in spirit but actually now MATCHES them at 25% back on inflight Wi-Fi and drinks under the refreshed cobrand suite; this is one of the few benefit areas where the entry-level Plus is fully aligned with the higher-tier Southwest cards
  • Lounge access: Not offered (Southwest does not operate airport lounges and the Plus card does not include Priority Pass, Sapphire Lounge access, or any other airport lounge benefit)
  • Transfer partners: Not applicable as a cobrand (Rapid Rewards points earned on this card stay in Southwest Rapid Rewards and cannot be transferred to other airline or hotel programs; this is a Chase cobrand, not an Ultimate Rewards earning card)
  • Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS application fee credit: Not offered on the Plus card (Chase reserves this credit for higher-tier Southwest products like Performance Business)
  • Cell phone protection: Not offered on the Plus card (Chase has not opted in cell phone protection on the Southwest Plus Visa Signature, unlike some other Visa Signature cards)
  • Trip cancellation/interruption insurance and trip delay reimbursement: Not listed in the Chase Southwest Plus travel & purchase coverage section; the Plus card's travel insurance suite is limited to lost luggage and baggage delay, in contrast to Chase Sapphire Preferred and Sapphire Reserve
  • A-List tier qualifying points (TQPs): The Plus card does not include the 2,500 TQPs per $5,000 spend toward A-List accelerator that the higher-tier Priority card carries; on the Plus you earn Rapid Rewards points but not tier qualifying points from card spend
  • Hotel or airline elite status grant: Not offered (the Plus card does not grant Southwest A-List status; it only helps with Companion Pass qualification via the 10,000-point annual boost and via points earned from spend and welcome bonus)
