Lufthansa Business Class

How to book Lufthansa's business class with points. The best program for the redemption is Air Canada Aeroplan at 70,000 points each way for the headline saver level.

Reality check: Business Class saver space is capacity-controlled. Most flights release 0-4 saver seats. The chart price is the floor, not the typical bookable price. Search availability first; transfer points only after you find the seat.

Lufthansa Business Class sits among the most-recognized premium products in transatlantic flying, largely because of the fully flat seat in a staggered 1-2-1 layout on widebody aircraft. Direct-aisle access for every passenger and a genuine cradle-to-flat recline make it a step above older angled-flat competitors. The soft product, including multi-course meals with regional German wines and noise-canceling headsets, consistently earns praise on long-haul sectors. That reputation drives demand, and demand drives award space scarcity.

The cleanest redemption path runs through Air Canada Aeroplan, which prices Lufthansa transatlantic Business Class at 70,000 points one-way at the saver level. That is the anchor number for this guide. Against our conservative 1.5¢ valuation for Aeroplan points, a 70,000-point booking delivers roughly $1,050 in value, which can compare favorably against cash fares that routinely clear $3,000 to $6,000 on peak dates. Aeroplan charges carrier-imposed surcharges on Lufthansa metal; expect fees in the range of several hundred dollars depending on origin. United MileagePlus is another Star Alliance partner option, but its pricing and fuel surcharge structure make Aeroplan the stronger choice for most itineraries. Transferring from Chase Ultimate Rewards to Aeroplan at a 1:1 ratio is one viable funding path; we value Chase UR at 2.0¢, so the opportunity cost of a transfer is real and worth weighing against other uses of those points.

Saver Business Class space on Lufthansa is capacity-controlled and release patterns vary considerably. Lufthansa historically opens a portion of saver inventory far in advance, sometimes 330 to 360 days out, and a second tranche can appear closer to departure as the airline manages load factors. Neither window is reliable. Seats on peak summer dates and holiday periods such as December and early January tend to disappear quickly or never surface at all. If your travel dates fall in shoulder season, say mid-January through March or October into early November, the odds of locating space improve, but that is a tendency, not a certainty. Checking multiple departure dates across a window of flexibility materially raises your chances of finding something.

Route and equipment choices carry meaningful tradeoffs. Lufthansa's Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC) hubs serve as the primary transatlantic gateways, so popular U.S. origins like JFK, ORD, and BOS all see nonstop service. Nonstop flights carry less risk of misconnects and typically use dedicated long-haul widebodies, but they also carry the most award demand. If nonstop space is unavailable, Aeroplan allows connections through other Star Alliance partners on the transatlantic leg, which opens up more routing permutations at the cost of added travel time. Be aware that Lufthansa operates multiple widebody types; the newer Business Class seat configuration is found on aircraft like the 747-8 and A350, while older equipment can appear on some routes and may feature a different seat product. Confirming the scheduled aircraft before committing to a transfer is not optional.

How to book Business Class

  1. Search availability first. Air Canada Aeroplan is the best search tool for Lufthansa saver inventory. Run your dates with ±3 day flex.
  2. Confirm the seat is bookable at the headline price. Business Class space appears and disappears within hours, especially on peak dates.
  3. Transfer points only after confirming. Transfers are one-way. If the seat vanishes mid-transfer the points are stuck in Air Canada Aeroplan.
  4. Book within the same session as the search if possible. Phone-booking is sometimes required for Cathay First, Etihad, JAL First, and Emirates First Suites.
