Lufthansa

How to book Lufthansa with points. Best program, saver pricing reality, and the hub-and-route map for the carrier.

All airlines

Lufthansa remains one of the most sought-after redemptions in the Star Alliance ecosystem, largely because of its long-haul cabin hardware. The airline's Business Class product features direct-aisle access on widebody configurations out of Frankfurt and Munich, and First Class on select long-haul routes sits in a genuinely small cabin, sometimes fewer than eight seats, making it one of the more exclusive products bookable on points. The Frankfurt and Munich hub structure also means Lufthansa connects North America to a wide sweep of European and beyond-Europe destinations, adding routing flexibility that single-hub carriers cannot match.

Among the programs that can book Lufthansa saver awards, Air Canada Aeroplan consistently stands out. Aeroplan prices transatlantic Business Class at 70,000 points one-way and First Class at 110,000 points one-way, numbers that align with what we consider competitive value when measured against our internal CPP benchmarks. Aeroplan also passes fuel surcharges through on Lufthansa awards, which is a cost factor worth pricing out before committing. Still, the program's ability to hold space while you assemble a transfer from Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards, or Capital One miles makes it the most practical entry point for most travelers targeting these redemptions.

From the United States, the most common Lufthansa gateways are JFK-FRA, ORD-MUC, and BOS-FRA. These routes typically operate on widebody equipment, including the 747-8 and A350 variants, which carry the premium cabin configurations worth booking. JFK and ORD in particular serve as volume hubs where Lufthansa schedules daily or near-daily service, so award searchers have more departure dates to work across versus thinner markets. If your originating city connects into one of these three airports without a separate international award segment, the routing complexity stays manageable.

Saver award space on Lufthansa, particularly in Business and First Class, is capacity-controlled and released at Lufthansa's discretion. The airline is known for being conservative with how many saver seats it makes available to partner programs, which means weeks or months of calendar browsing can yield limited results, especially in First Class. Do not assume that holding transferable points currency is the same as holding a confirmed seat. Space can appear and disappear across a search window, and premium availability around major holidays or school-break periods is typically tighter than shoulder-season travel dates. Building in flexible date ranges and being willing to consider less conventional departure airports or connection patterns meaningfully broadens the realistic search window.

When points are involved, the transfer step is one-directional and usually irreversible. Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer to Aeroplan at a 1:1 ratio, as do American Express Membership Rewards and Capital One miles, preserving full point value at the moment of transfer. At our 2.0 cents per point conservative valuation for Chase UR, a 70,000-point Business Class redemption represents roughly $1,400 in value, and a 110,000-point First Class award comes to approximately $2,200, assuming you can locate saver space and the surcharges do not erode the net return significantly. Those figures make Lufthansa competitive on a CPP basis, but only when the space actually exists to book.

Find space first, then transfer.

Award strategy

  1. Search through Air Canada Aeroplan first. Its award chart and search engine usually surface Lufthansa saver inventory at the best price.
  2. Use ±3 day flex on departure dates. Saver awards on Lufthansa appear and disappear within hours, especially on peak seasonal routes.
  3. Confirm the seat is held at the headline price before transferring points. Transfers are one-way; if the seat vanishes mid-transfer the points are stuck.
  4. Book within the same session as the search when possible. Saver inventory you saw 30 minutes ago may be gone.
