W Hotels

Marriott's lifestyle brand, once-aspirational, now uneven. Property quality is a coin-flip.

All hotel brands

W Hotels occupies the lifestyle tier of the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio, sitting above conventional full-service properties but below the ultra-luxury Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis flags. The brand's design-forward identity and destination-resort footprint make it disproportionately valuable on points relative to what you would pay in cash, particularly at beach and city properties where nightly rates routinely exceed $500. For travelers willing to do the calendar work, W represents one of the more compelling redemption targets in the entire Bonvoy program.

Redemption math inside W's category range varies widely. Most urban Ws land in categories 4 through 6, putting standard saver nights between 35,000 and 60,000 points. The top of the program sits at 90,000 points per night for peak category 7 stays. The W Maldives is the benchmark here: during off-peak windows (April through May), saver awards drop to approximately 70,000 points per night, which is exceptional value for an overwater-bungalow resort where cash rates frequently exceed $1,500. At our conservative Bonvoy valuation of roughly 0.7 cents per point, a 70k night represents about $490 in point cost against that cash rate, making the gap between cost and value unusually wide. Explore more Bonvoy sweet spots if the Maldives is your target.

Transfer strategy matters here because Marriott Bonvoy points are not something most people accumulate quickly through everyday spend. The more efficient path is moving flexible currencies into Bonvoy at the right moment. American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, and Citi ThankYou all transfer to Bonvoy at a 1:1 ratio. Given our valuations of 2.0 cents per Chase UR point and roughly 2.0 cents per Amex MR point, you are accepting a significant value step-down when converting to Bonvoy at 0.7 cents. That trade-off only makes sense when the specific redemption, at a specific property on specific dates, delivers a cash-rate spread large enough to justify it. Never transfer speculatively. Check award availability first, confirm the dates work, and then initiate the transfer. Points move within minutes for all three programs, so there is no need to park currency in Bonvoy in advance.

The watch-outs are real and worth taking seriously. Marriott's shift toward dynamic pricing means the 35,000-point floor is increasingly theoretical; many W properties now price awards well above standard saver rates except in narrow off-peak windows. Resort fees are not covered by points and can add $50 to $100 per night in cash charges at beach destinations, so factor that into your true cost. Perhaps the bigger issue is brand-standard inconsistency across the W portfolio. Newer flagship properties like W Algarve, W Bali Seminyak, and W Barcelona are delivering on the lifestyle promise. Older domestic properties, including several in New York and Atlanta, have accumulated dated furnishings and maintenance complaints in recent reviews. Check current guest feedback for the specific property you are targeting rather than assuming the brand name guarantees a consistent product. See individual property notes on our W Hotels redemption pages before committing.

The strategic sequence is straightforward: identify your dates, search award availability through Marriott Bonvoy directly, and lock in a refundable award hold before touching your transferable points. Refundable Bonvoy awards protect you if cash prices drop or plans change, and the no-transfer-until-confirmed rule is especially important at a brand where dynamic pricing can shift award costs between your search and your booking. Once the hotel is confirmed, build your airfare around those dates rather than the reverse.

Find space first, then transfer.
