Seattle to Honolulu in Economy

The best points-and-miles redemptions for economy between Seattle and Honolulu. Sorted by cents-per-point, but availability is the binding constraint, not points balance. Verify saver space before transferring.

Honolulu is a perennial high-demand destination, and the SEA-HNL route reflects that. Before you move a single point, the math needs to make sense. The grounding data here is honest: there is no dedicated mainland-to-Hawaii saver sweet spot in the provided program data that produces outsized value on SEA-HNL specifically. What does exist is a genuine sweet spot worth knowing: 5,000 British Airways Avios to book Hawaiian Airlines inter-island segments off-peak, pricing out at roughly 2.6¢ per point against a cash fare of around $130. That beats our 1.5¢ per point conservative Avios valuation by a meaningful margin, and it matters for your trip planning if you are connecting onward from Honolulu to Maui, Kauai, or the Big Island.

For the SEA-HNL segment itself, start your availability search with programs that have strong Hawaiian Airlines or Alaska Airlines partnerships, since those carriers dominate this Pacific corridor. Alaska Mileage Plan and British Airways Avios are logical first stops given Hawaiian Airlines' partner relationships. Run searches across multiple programs before committing to any transfer, because award inventory is not uniform across partners.

Economy saver space on SEA-HNL exists, but the availability picture is uneven. Shoulder season (roughly late January through March, and mid-September through mid-November) tends to produce more open dates. Peak summer travel (June through August) and major holiday windows around Thanksgiving, Christmas, and spring break are a different story. Seats fill early and award space compresses significantly. Search as far out as your program allows, set alerts if your tool supports it, and be prepared to be flexible on travel dates by several days in either direction.

The most practical transfer paths for a Hawaii economy redemption run through the major transferable bank currencies. Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer to British Airways Avios at 1:1, as do American Express Membership Rewards and Capital One miles. Those Avios become most powerful on the inter-island side at 5,000 points per segment. For the transpacific SEA-HNL leg, you will need to identify which program has actual award space before deciding which currency to move, since transfer windows are typically instant for Avios but cannot be reversed once initiated.

Putting CPP in honest perspective: our conservative Avios valuation sits at 1.5¢ per point. The inter-island Hawaiian sweet spot at 2.6¢ per point clears that bar comfortably, making it one of the stronger economy uses of Avios in the domestic-adjacent market. For the SEA-HNL leg specifically, the value you extract depends entirely on the cash fare you are displacing. A $300 economy ticket on 15,000 points works out to 2.0¢ per point, which is competitive but not extraordinary. A heavily discounted $189 cash fare on the same award spend drops well below our valuation threshold, making cash the smarter call. Always check the going cash price before locking in a transfer. Find space first, then transfer.

The new EMEA chart dropped the floor below the prior 30,000. NOT RE-CONFIRMED: the current North America-to-Far East/Japan partner economy figure could not be verified (readings ranged 45,000-75,000 and did not converge), and most credible readings exceed the stored 40,000, so this number is likely too low. Pending re-verification before booking. Phone booking usually required. No fuel surcharges.

How to book economy from SEA

For most hawaii routes from the US, the playbook is the same:

  1. Search availability first.Plug your dates into an alliance partner's site (United MileagePlus for Star Alliance, British Airways Avios for oneworld, Flying Blue for SkyTeam), confirm there's a saver award seat on the date you want.
  2. Match the program to your bank-points balance. Don't transfer to whichever program has the cheapest paper price. Transfer to whichever program has actual space.
  3. Transfer the exact amount you need (plus a small buffer for taxes/fees). Transfers are instant on most programs but irreversible.
  4. Book within 24 hours of transfer.Saver space can disappear. If it does, the program will usually let you redeposit for ~$50-100, but it's a hassle.
