Chicago O'Hare to Honolulu in Economy

The best points-and-miles redemptions for economy between Chicago O'Hare and Honolulu. Sorted by cents-per-point, but availability is the binding constraint, not points balance. Verify saver space before transferring.

The grounding data for this route contains one specific sweet spot, and it does not apply to ORD-HNL mainline travel. The 5,000 Avios Hawaiian inter-island redemption covers short hops between Honolulu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island, valued at 2.6¢ per point against our 1.5¢ British Airways Avios valuation. That is a strong return on a sub-$130 ticket, but it is a separate booking from your Chicago departure. For the ORD-HNL leg itself, no single chart-busting sweet spot exists in the grounding data, so the work is finding the best saver rate across the programs that cover this transpacific domestic corridor.

Start your availability search with a transfer partner and United MileagePlus. United operates ORD-HNL directly, making MileagePlus the most straightforward path for that metal. a transfer partner prices United-operated awards on its own distance-based chart and can sometimes price differently than MileagePlus saver rates. Hawaiian Airlines is also worth checking on its own program, particularly if Alaska Airlines codeshare space appears, since Alaska Mileage Plan partners with Hawaiian and occasionally surfaces competitive economy rates on Hawaii routes.

Economy saver space on ORD-HNL exists, but it is not uniformly available. This is not a high-frequency business corridor, and United allocates award inventory based on load factors. Shoulder-season travel, think April through early June or mid-September through October, tends to surface more saver-level seats than peak summer (June 15 through August) or the Thanksgiving-to-New-Year window. Holiday travel to Hawaii is among the most capacity-constrained domestic award routes in the United States. If your dates fall in peak periods, plan to be flexible by several days or consider positioning through a hub with more flight options.

For transfer paths, the currencies that move into the most useful programs here are Chase Ultimate Rewards and Capital One miles. Chase transfers 1:1 to United MileagePlus and 1:1 to a transfer partner, both directly relevant to this route. Capital One also transfers 1:1 to a transfer partner. American Express Membership Rewards transfers 1:1 to a transfer partner as well, though Amex does not have a direct path into MileagePlus. If you plan to tack on inter-island travel after landing in Honolulu, any of those same currencies (Chase, Amex, Capital One) also transfer into British Airways Avios at 1:1, funding that 5,000-Avios inter-island redemption described above.

On the CPP math: our conservative rewardztravel.com valuation for Chase Ultimate Rewards sits at 2.0¢ per point and for Capital One miles at 1.7¢ per point. A redemption only makes sense if the saver award rate on ORD-HNL clears those thresholds against the actual cash price of the ticket on your specific dates. Cash fares to Honolulu from Chicago vary widely, and a deeply discounted sale fare can compress the CPP well below what makes a points transfer worthwhile. Pull the cash price before you initiate any transfer, calculate the CPP yourself against the award rate you have confirmed, and compare it to our valuations. Transfers to airline programs are one-way and non-reversible, so confirm available space in the specific cabin and on the specific dates before moving any points.

Find space first, then transfer.

The new EMEA chart dropped the floor below the prior 30,000. NOT RE-CONFIRMED: the current North America-to-Far East/Japan partner economy figure could not be verified (readings ranged 45,000-75,000 and did not converge), and most credible readings exceed the stored 40,000, so this number is likely too low. Pending re-verification before booking. Phone booking usually required. No fuel surcharges.

#6 · Alaska Mileage Plan· 1.37¢/pt baseline

How to book economy from ORD

For most hawaii routes from the US, the playbook is the same:

  1. Search availability first.Plug your dates into an alliance partner's site (United MileagePlus for Star Alliance, British Airways Avios for oneworld, Flying Blue for SkyTeam), confirm there's a saver award seat on the date you want.
  2. Match the program to your bank-points balance. Don't transfer to whichever program has the cheapest paper price. Transfer to whichever program has actual space.
  3. Transfer the exact amount you need (plus a small buffer for taxes/fees). Transfers are instant on most programs but irreversible.
  4. Book within 24 hours of transfer.Saver space can disappear. If it does, the program will usually let you redeposit for ~$50-100, but it's a hassle.
