Manila with points

Philippine Airlines via United partners is sometimes available at 80k. ANA via Tokyo is the steady alternative.

All destinations

Manila sits at an interesting intersection for award travelers: it's a Star Alliance hub with multiple feed options through Tokyo, and the Philippine Airlines codeshare relationship with United MileagePlus creates a second pricing lane that, when available, prices transcon-length itineraries at true long-haul saver rates. The structural quirk is that two separate ecosystems, Star Alliance and the United-PAL partnership, can both land you in the same seat at 80,000 miles in business class, giving you redundancy that most Asia routes don't offer.

On the airfare side, the steadiest path is ANA via Tokyo Narita or Haneda, bookable through ANA Mileage Club or through United MileagePlus at the 80,000-mile saver rate for business class from the US West Coast. ANA's own program occasionally prices the same routing more favorably depending on your origin, so it's worth cross-checking both. The United-PAL option referenced in the tagline is real but operationally thinner; Philippine Airlines saver space through the MileagePlus partnership surfaces inconsistently, and you should treat it as a bonus find rather than a primary strategy. Japan Airlines through its own program (JAL Mileage Bank) is a third lane worth checking if you hold transferable points from Amex Membership Rewards, since JAL is a direct Amex transfer partner. Premium cabin space on any of these carriers is severely capacity-controlled, and business class availability to Manila specifically can tighten months in advance during peak travel periods. Confirm open space in the booking tool before moving a single point.

For hotels, Conrad Manila is the standout redemption. At roughly 70,000 Hilton Honors points per night, it sits in a category where our conservative Hilton Honors valuation of 0.5 cents per point would price that night at $350, and Conrad Manila regularly posts cash rates well above that figure during peak season, making this one of the stronger Hilton fixed-category values in Southeast Asia. Manila Marriott and Shangri-La The Fort are worth pricing dynamically through Marriott Bonvoy and the World of Hyatt or IHG ecosystems respectively, since their category placement shifts with demand. Conrad is the most consistent performer on a pure cents-per-point basis given the property's positioning in the Bay Area corridor.

Seasonality matters here more than on some Asia routes. Manila's dry season runs December through May, and that window aligns almost perfectly with when award space gets scarce. Carriers tend to open their initial business class award inventory roughly 330 to 355 days out depending on the program, and the best saver seats on ANA and United-operated metal often disappear within days of release for December and January departures. The shoulder months of March and April can offer a useful compromise: still dry season but with meaningfully less competition for award space compared to the holiday window.

The booking sequence follows a simple logic: lock in the hotel first using a cancellable Hilton Honors or Marriott Bonvoy redemption, then hunt for the flight. Conrad Manila awards are generally cancellable with sufficient notice and do not require a point transfer from a bank currency, so holding that reservation costs you nothing while you search for business class availability. Only when you have confirmed open saver space in the booking tool should you transfer points from Chase Ultimate Rewards (our 2.0 cents per point valuation), Amex Membership Rewards, or whichever currency feeds your target airline program; transfers are instant on some partners but irreversible on all of them. Find space first, then transfer.
