Korean Air

How to book Korean Air with points. Best program, saver pricing reality, and the hub-and-route map for the carrier.

All airlines

Korean Air sits in an interesting position within the SkyTeam alliance: it operates one of the more consistently praised long-haul cabin products in the Pacific corridor, with Prestige Class (business) and a proper First Class cabin on select widebody aircraft. Its primary hub at Seoul Incheon is one of the busiest connection points in Asia, giving travelers a realistic path to dozens of onward destinations across East and Southeast Asia after a transpacific leg. For points enthusiasts focused on the US-to-Asia corridor, Korean Air represents a legitimate target redemption, particularly for those who have accumulated Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards, or Delta SkyMiles.

The two programs most worth evaluating for Korean Air saver awards are Korean SKYPASS itself and Delta SkyMiles. SKYPASS publishes saver-level pricing starting at 75,000 points for Prestige Class and 125,000 points for First Class on transpacific routes, which compares favorably against our 1.5¢ per point conservative valuation for SkyMiles when you model out the total redemption value. Delta SkyMiles, as a fellow SkyTeam partner, can price Korean Air award space dynamically, so the exact rate you see will vary; SKYPASS redemptions use a fixed chart, which makes planning more predictable. Neither program requires a fuel surcharge waiver chase the way some European programs do on partner bookings, though always confirm the exact tax-and-fee total before committing to a transfer.

On the US side, Korean Air operates nonstop transpacific service from LAX (Los Angeles), JFK (New York), and ATL (Atlanta), covering the three largest hub markets on the SkyTeam network. Equipment on these routes is typically a Boeing 777 or an Airbus A380 variant, depending on the specific route and season. ATL-ICN in particular benefits from Korean Air's codeshare relationship with Delta, making it a natural pairing for Delta SkyMiles holders who earn heavily through Delta flights or the Delta co-branded credit card ecosystem. JFK-ICN and LAX-ICN tend to have higher overall seat capacity, which affects how award inventory surfaces in search tools.

Saver business and first class space on Korean Air is capacity-controlled, as it is on every major international carrier. Korean Air determines how many saver seats to release on any given flight, and that number can be very low or zero, particularly during peak travel periods around Chuseok, the Lunar New Year, and summer school-holiday windows. Prestige Class saver space at 75,000 SKYPASS miles is not consistently available far out in advance, and First Class saver space at 125,000 miles is released even more selectively. Positioning transfers as a first step before searching is a common mistake that can leave points stranded in a program without a viable redemption. Check award space availability first using SKYPASS or Delta search tools before making any commitment.

When you do find confirmed space, Chase Ultimate Rewards transfers to Korean SKYPASS at a 1:1 ratio, and Amex Membership Rewards also connects to Delta SkyMiles at 1:1, giving domestic earners a workable pipeline into either program. Our conservative 2.0¢ valuation for Chase UR means a 75,000-point Prestige Class redemption would need to deliver at least $1,500 in cash value to break even against paying cash for business; on many transpacific itineraries, the math works in the award traveler's favor, but only if you actually secure the seat. Search Korean SKYPASS and Delta SkyMiles for confirmed award space first, then transfer.

Award strategy

  1. Search through Korean SKYPASS / Delta SkyMiles first. Its award chart and search engine usually surface Korean Air saver inventory at the best price.
  2. Use ±3 day flex on departure dates. Saver awards on Korean Air appear and disappear within hours, especially on peak seasonal routes.
  3. Confirm the seat is held at the headline price before transferring points. Transfers are one-way; if the seat vanishes mid-transfer the points are stuck.
  4. Book within the same session as the search when possible. Saver inventory you saw 30 minutes ago may be gone.
